What You Need to Know About Water Damage in Your Home

Water damage is one of the most common homeowners insurance claims. Water damage can be the result of faulty plumbing, malfunctioning appliances or weather events.

Even though your homeowners insurance can help you financially cover some of these events, it’s also essential to understand how to avoid damage if possible.

How to Avoid Water Damage to Your Home

Consider the following tips to prevent damage in your home:

  • Inspect plumbing and appliances. Keep an eye on the condition of your plumbing and appliances. A burst pipe or a malfunctioning dishwasher can quickly lead to water damage. Regularly check these systems and address any issues immediately.
  • Keep an eye out for water stains, drips and signs of mold. Any of these may indicate a leak. It’s essential to find the origins of the leak to prevent extensive damage and costly repairs.
  • Install water detection devices. These devices can notify you of leaks before they cause significant damage.
  • Check your roof for leaks. Promptly repair any missing or damaged shingles to prevent water from getting in through the roof.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Water Damage?

Homeowners insurance typically covers the cost of water damage from a burst pipe or appliance leak. It may also cover the cost of repairs caused by water used to extinguish flames, such as from sprinklers or fire department hoses.

When it comes to weather-related damage, coverage is a little more complex.

Homeowners insurance policies typically offer limited coverage for damage caused by heavy rain, hail or roof leaks under specific circumstances, such as when the structure is first damaged by a covered peril (e.g., a tree falling on the roof).

However, it typically does not cover water damage resulting from negligence, wear and tear or flooding (such as a storm surge during a hurricane).

Homeowners can purchase additional coverage, such as water backup and specific flood coverage, for more financial protection.
